MCD has sealed 20 coaching institutes so far.

On Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sealed the basements of six coaching institutes in Old Rajendra Nagar in Central Delhi and one in Mukherjee Nagar in North West Delhi, taking the total number of basements sealed to 20. Earlier on Sunday, the Municipal Corporation sealed 13 illegal coaching centers in the area. Rao IAS Study Circle has already been sealed by the police.

This latest sealing action by the MCD comes two days after three students preparing for the civil services exam died after water filled in the basement of Rao IAS Coaching Centre in Old Rajendra Nagar. The institutes against which action has been taken include many prominent coaching centres like Drishti IAS.

The municipal corporation also carried out an anti-encroachment drive in Old Rajendra Nagar, demolishing structures that were covering storm drains, leading to flood-like situation in the area, officials said on Monday. MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar told reporters that a sealing drive would be carried out in other parts of the city too against establishments illegally using basements for commercial activities. So far, 20 basements of coaching institutes have been sealed in Rajendra Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar, which were being illegally used to run libraries or classes, officials said.

These institutions were blamed

According to an official statement, the major coaching institutes that came under the scanner of the MCD on Monday include Drishti IAS Institute, Vaji Ram & Ravi IAS Hub and Shriram IAS Institute in Rajendra Nagar and Drishti (The Vision) in Mukherjee Nagar. Three basements of the building of Vaji Ram & Ravi IAS Hub have been sealed, the statement said. An MCD official said action was being taken against establishments illegally using basements in the area. Later, a similar drive would be launched across the city against establishments operating illegally from basements, the official said.
