2 Iranian agents, 3 rooms, bombs fitted in a few minutes… this is how Mossad conducted the operation to kill the Hamas chief

Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad had tasked Iranian security agents to plant explosives in the building in Tehran where Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was staying. According to The Telegraph, initially there was a plan to kill Haniyeh in May when he had come to Tehran for the funeral of former Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.

According to two Iranian officials who spoke to the Telegraph, the operation was cancelled because of the huge crowd that turned up and there was little hope of it being successful. The timing of the operation was then changed.

Two agents working under the direction of Mossad planted explosive devices in three separate rooms of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) guesthouse in northern Tehran. The location was strategically chosen because it was highly likely that Haniya would be staying there.

How the Mossad works
With an annual budget of $3 billion and 7000 employees, Mossad is the second largest spy agency in the West after the CIA. Mossad has many departments, but not much is known about its internal structure. It not only has a network of informers and agents inside Palestinian terrorist groups, but also has agents in hostile countries like Lebanon, Syria and Iran. The intelligence agency’s vast spy network provides it with in-depth information about the activities of the heads of terrorist organizations. This is why they carry out precise killings when required.

Operation to eliminate Hariya
According to The Telegraph, surveillance footage in possession of Iranian authorities shows the agents moving around stealthily. The footage shows the agents entering and exiting several rooms in a matter of minutes. After planting the devices, they secretly left Iran, but they had a source inside the country. At 2 a.m. on Wednesday, the operatives remotely detonated explosives planted in the room where Hania was staying, killing him.

The killing was confirmed by IRGC officials, who believe that Mossad employed agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi security unit, which is tasked with protecting top-ranking leaders and officials inside and outside the country.

An IRGC official told The Telegraph, “This is a humiliation for Iran and a huge security lapse.” The official said a special working group has been set up to devise a strategy to address the lapse.

potential consequences
Following this blunder, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is considering its options for retaliation. A direct attack on Tel Aviv could reportedly be launched, potentially involving Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies. Apart from this, Iran may also try other options to attack Israel.

Haniya was murdered on Wednesday

In fact, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday (July 30). During this, Haniyya also met Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The very next day (Wednesday), that is, early this morning, Israel blew up the house in which Ismail Haniyya was staying. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued a statement saying that the attack was carried out by targeting Haniyya’s hideout in Tehran. In this, along with the Hamas chief, one of his bodyguards was also killed.
