New Jersey police said there was a toddler is fatally beaten Tuesday evening by a dog while in the care of a juvenile at a Newark residence.
‘Distressed family asked for privacy.’
Police said the girl wandered away from the babysitter and encountered a pit bull, one of their four dogs, at the home on Second Avenue.
The girl was rushed to University Hospital after being beaten with serious injuries. She was later pronounced dead at about 7 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Four dogs were removed from the home, and police are trying to determine if just one dog attacked the child or if other dogs were involved. They were placed in quarantine with Newark Animal Control.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the official cause and manner of death will be determined by autopsy,” said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.
The distraught family asked for privacy as they deal with the tragic incident.
“I saw this amount of police, I got really worried because it was a lot of commotion going on.” said WCBS-TV’s Neighbors. “I couldn’t do anything about it because I couldn’t see.”
