‘10,675 illegal immigrants in Manipur’, CM N Biren Singh said- 143 kept in detention center

Manipur, being a border state, has been grappling with the problem of infiltration. Chief Minister N Biren Singh told the assembly that 10,675 illegal immigrants have been identified in the last five years. During this period, 85 people have also been deported. The Chief Minister said that 143 such people are currently in detention centers.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that illegal immigrants are mainly from countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh, Norway, China and Nepal. MLA Suraj Kumar Okram had asked this question in the assembly, to which the Chief Minister replied. The CM also said that Rs 85,55,761 has been spent on the maintenance of the 143 people who are in the detention center.

According to CM Biren Singh, there are 11 people living illegally in Imphal West. There is one illegal immigrant in Imphal East, one in Bishnupur, one in Thoubal, 6 in Kakching, 150 in Churachandpur, 1895 in Chandel, 2406 in Tengnoupal, 3 in Ukhrul, 2 in Kangpokpi and 6199 in Kamjong.

Border fencing work completed in 9 kilometers

Manipur CM informed in the assembly that a committee has also been formed to stop illegal infiltration. A verification campaign was also launched to identify foreigners in Churachandpur, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong and Pherzaul districts from March 2023 under the supervision of the Home Ministry. He said that border fencing has also been installed on the 9.12 km border from pillar number 79 to 81.

Border fencing is to be done in 120 kilometers

The Home Ministry has approved border fencing in 120 km area in Manipur instead of the demand of 80 km. Physical work is going on in 21.86 km stretch. Apart from this, the police of the districts are continuously working day and night to identify illegal immigrants. Work is also going on to build six police stations and 34 outposts in the border areas.
