10 years of Jan Dhan completed… 53 crore accounts opened till now, PM Modi called it historic

Today marks 10 years since the launch of Jan Dhan accounts in the country. It was launched on 28 August 2024 during the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the aim of empowering the poor economically and a big change has also been seen in this decade. PM Modi has termed it a historic day through an ex-post. At the same time, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has cleared the whole picture of the change by presenting the figures. PM Modi called it a historic day
On Wednesday, on the occasion of completion of 10 years of the launch of Jan Dhan accounts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said through a post on Twitter (now X) account that, ‘Today is a historic day for the country.’ While wishing all the beneficiaries, he said that Jan Dhan Yojana has been successful in empowering crores of countrymen, especially our poor brothers and sisters, economically and giving them an opportunity to live a life with dignity. Along with this, he has also shared a photo in his post, according to which the number of Jan Dhan accounts opened in the country so far has increased to more than 53 crores.

Finance Minister shared the figures
The country’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also shared important figures related to the Jan Dhan Yojana on completion of a decade and said that it has been successful. According to the Finance Minister, 53.13 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened for the poor in the last 10 years and about 80 percent of the accounts are active. More than Rs 2.31 lakh crore is deposited in them till August 14, 2024. Nirmala Sitharaman said that out of the Jan Dhan accounts opened, 67 percent of the accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, while 55 percent of these accounts belong to women.

Describing PMJDY as successful, the Finance Minister said that after its launch, the average balance per account was Rs 1,065 in March 2015, which has now increased to Rs 4,352. Apart from this, with the increase in the number of accounts, there has been a big jump in the deposit amount. The total deposit in March 2015 was Rs 15,670 crore, which has increased to Rs 2.31,236 crore by August 14, 2024.

What are the benefits of Jan Dhan accounts?
Jan Dhan accounts are different from the savings accounts opened in various banks and the benefits in them are also amazing. Actually, not only interest is received on the amount deposited in the Jan Dhan account, but with the opening of this account, the account holder also gets accidental insurance of Rs 1 lakh. Not only this, a life cover of Rs 30,000 is also available in it. Like bank accounts, there is no minimum balance limit in Jan Dhan accounts, rather the beneficiary also gets an overdraft facility of Rs 10,000.

In the year 2014, the Modi government started the Jan Dhan Yojana with the goal that every citizen of the country should get the benefit of banking services. Opening a Jan Dhan Account is very easy. Any Indian citizen can apply to open an account under this scheme. The applicant should be at least 10 years of age.
